FAQ

Here we will try to answer all your important questions about Semi-Permanent Make Up (SPMU)

What is semi-permanent makeup?

Semi-permanent makeup is a cosmetic technique where coloured pigment is applied to the upper layer of the Dermis. The result is long lasting colour that resembles lightly applied makeup.  This procedure is also known as permanent makeup, Nanoblading, Featherbrows, micropigmentation, SPMU, PMU,  Semi permanent makeup and cosmetic tattooing. Microblading however is a technique using a manual blade to create a fine incision in the skin and then pigment is implanted.

What can I expect during a treatment?

First we start with a consultation.  At this time we will discuss your desired semi-permanent makeup expectations.  I'll then measure your facial features and 'draw on' a non-permanent test to ensure you will be happy with the results. We will then go through colours.  Once we have agreed on the colour and shape, I'll begin your treatment using a sterile needle or microblade. Once we have completed the procedure, you will be provided with aftercare advice and healing balm to protect your skin. You may experience some slight swelling and redness after treatment but this will subside within 24-48 hours. Skin may feel sensitive as well in the treated area. The appointment itself takes approximately 2-3 hours, please allow 3 hours as this is a treatment that cannot be rushed. You'll then return 6-12 weeks later for a second appointment to top up any lost areas of pigment, adjust the colour and tweak the shape if necessary.

Does it hurt?

Most of my clients were surprised to find that there was not much pain, a few said it was a little painful at times.  Everyone has a different level of pain so please don’t judge yourself on others.  Whilst the semi-permanent makeup application is a form of tattooing, it's not as painful as this method.  Most people describe the feeling as a scratching sensation with slight vibration. Throughout the procedure I will make sure you feel as comfortable as possible.

When will I see results?

After the first treatment the colour will look darker by 30-50%. This is to be expected and softens between 4-7 days. The treated areas might also appear dry and flaky after around 2 days but this won't be too noticeable. Again, this is normal as is a slight swelling directly after the procedure. During the healing process you might even notice the makeup tones fade quite considerably but this is temporary. After 4-6 weeks the true colour and result will take on its more permanent appearance. That's why a second appointment is made once everything has settled down and I can complete any areas that need balancing out or retouching. I can provide pictures of what to expect during this process for your reference.

How long does it last?

This will be down to a variety of factors including your lifestyle, your skintype, environmental factors and simple genetics. Most people find it lasts for a minimum of 9 months and anything up to 3 years. Refresher colour boosts every 12-18 months are recommended to keep the desired colour strength maintained.

Who would benefit from this?

Semi-permanent makeup is brilliant for many women. The treatment can be very gentle and understated or it can be strong and glamorous, depending on your tastes. Women who will benefit most include: Busy working mum's who don't have a lot of time to worry about makeup each morning. Women who enjoy sports such as swimming, running or aerobics and want to look good all the time. Those with sparse hair growth or over plucked eyebrows lacking shape and definition. Ladies with eyesight difficulties for whom daily makeup application is difficult. Those who have experienced hair loss due to chemotherapy or alopecia.

Is it for everyone?

Semi-permanent makeup treatment is suitable for most women (and men). There are some exceptions however. Women with very oily skin or enlarged pores might find the procedure will be ineffective, this is mainly for microblading. Certain medical conditions also prevent treatment being allowed. During the initial consultation, all these factors will be discussed and you'll be assessed for your suitability.

Is it expensive?

For the length of time semi-permanent makeup lasts, it's a very reasonable investment.  The treatment process is roughly a 6 hour process in total, done over 2 sessions 6-12 weeks apart.  Hence the higher cost of treatment.
